Applying for a job online or in person?

I am a 19 year old college student and want to work at a retail store such as Target, Walgreens, Best Buy, Kohl's, etc. this summer. I have two options: either apply online through their websites OR physically go into the store and ask if they have job opening and then request an application. Which one is better to do?
